GRAMMY AWARDS 2008: OUR PREDICTIONS

Album of the Year
• Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, Foo Fighters
• These Days, Vince Gill
• River: The Joni Letters, Herbie Hancock
• Graduation, Kanye West
• Back to Black, Amy Winehouse
Side note: This was a tough decision. Kanye’s Graduation, while a masterpiece, was not nearly as good as his last two albums. And let’s face it: Winehouse, as much as we hate to admit it, redefined soul music this year with Back To Black. No one would follow her every trial and tribulation unless she was truly brilliant. Amy takes the cake. And please don’t call us out on some racism shit.
Record of the Year
• “Irreplaceable,” Beyoncé
• “The Pretender,” Foo Fighters
• “Umbrella,” Rihanna (featuring Jay-Z)
• “What Goes Around . . . Comes Around,” Justin Timberlake
• “Rehab,” Amy Winehouse
Everyone dug this hip-pop duet. Blacks, whites, asians, latinos, middle easterners–you name it–couldn’t help themselves from shouting out “Ella-Ella-Eh-Eh-Eh” in public. Think of it this way: how many times did someone tell you to shut up as you mimicked Rihanna’s hook in this song? “Rehab” was also a hit–but nowhere near as big. Justin was alright but nowhere near as powerful. And “Irreplaceable” is outdated. As for the Foo Fighters, who cares?
Song of the Year
• “Before He Cheats,” John Kear & Chris Tompkins, songwriters (Carrie Underwood)
• “Hey There Delilah,” Tom Higgenson, songwriters (Plain White T’s)
• “Like A Star,” Corinne Bailey Rae, songwriter (Corinne Bailey Rae)
• “Rehab,” Amy Winehouse
• “Umbrella,” Shawn Carter, Kuk Harrell, Terius “The-Dream” Nash & Christopher Stewart, songwriters (Rihanna Featuring Jay-Z)
Look above.
Best New Artist
• Feist
• Ledisi
• Paramore
• Taylor Swift
• Amy Winehouse
Do you even know who half these artists are? Nonetheless, for us Americans, Amy popped out of nowhere and landed a #1 record full of undeniable hits.
Pop Vocal Album
• Lost Highway, Bon Jovi
• The Reminder, Feist
• It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, Maroon 5
• Memory Almost Full, Paul McCartney
• Back To Black, Amy Winehouse
Rap Album
• Finding Forever, Common
• Kingdom Come, Jay-Z
• Hip Hop Is Dead, Nas
• T.I. vs T.I.P., T.I.
• Graduation, Kanye West
Once again, this was a tough decision. It’s sad to admit it, but Common is ridiculously underrated. I think Finding Forever was a better album, but the mainstream world eats up anything Kanye.
Contemporary R&B Album
• Konvicted, Akon
• Just Like You, Keyshia Cole
• Fantasia, Fantasia
• East Side Story, Emily King
• Because Of You, Ne-Yo
Akon’s album blew up far past our expectations, but I almost cringe at the thought of calling it R&B. I’d say it’s half hip and half pop. No one cared about Emily King’s debut, Fantasia’s album wasn’t very well received, and Keyshia’s album is just starting (IMO) to pick up motion. Ne-Yo spawned multiple hits with Because Of You, which is why I think he’ll take the cake.
So…unexpectedly…who takes the cake? F-ed up AMY WINEHOUSE. Too bad she won’t even be there. Oh well, tune into CBS tonight at 8pm to see how well our predictions match up.
