Song Review: Webbie- “Independent”
After a few weeks of being consumed by the college antics of senior year and mindless research papers on Restoration England, The White Boy is back and here to keep up with his posts.
Since my absence, I have had the privilege to come into contact with a song that even my medicinal marijuana-using Aunt may find interesting. With the major theme of women empowerment, I will acknowledge that this song is a small step away from cliché rap songs that objectify women. Yes, we can get all riled up because Webbie is stating what it means to be independent. Shit, his chorus is even based on spelling out the word. Could it be that rap genius, Webbie, has created the most groundbreaking song since Aretha’s uplifting hit “Respect?” Well, in the words of Dunder-Miflin’s finest salesman, Stanly Hudson, “Sometimes I say crazy things.”
This song has a nice beat, people love to dance to it when they are shit-tank, and it makes my buddy Jimmy the physics major move in ways that are only seen in the courtship rituals of rare exotic birds (+5 points). Although I do commend the song for not referring to women as “bitches;” “broads,” “somethings,” and “hoes” are not much better. Also, it seems like the various rappers in this song only like the independent women because they buy them shit and make them look good. They never talk about the intellectual independence of “broads.” Yet, I like this song because Webbie and his jolly gang are finally admitting the fact that they would rather sit on their asses eating Pizza flavored Combos in their speedos and boots while watching re-runs of Making the Band 2 than actually writing coherent lyrics. With a line like “She Flossy Bossy” one has to wonder which Arkansas elementary school had a “Write a Hit Rap Song” contest. For dancability and crowd appeal I will give this song an 8+5/10. For its originality I will give this song a 6/10. And for chick appeal, I will award a 10/10 rating. Congrats Webbie! You are the Skebby Bebby to my Hating Ratings.

Remember when we broke Karina Pasian’s demo of “Official Girl”? Well it turns out that Cassie actually took the song and is releasing it as the first single off her sophomore album. I heard from a source that the record will be called Connecticut Fever. If this is the case, I look forward to seeing the album debut at #487 on the Billboard Charts after scanning eleven copies. Anyway, aside from that, we thought it would only be fair to share Cassie’s version of the Clutch-written and Danja-produced track. To be honest, I think Karina’s version has a lot more flavor and soul than Cassie’s… and it’s still only Karina’s demo we’re comparing with!
